Day 6 (Thursday, August 20th, 2009)

Another day of work in Clintwood. The teens, Mr. Scott, Mr. Tony, Mrs. Barbara, and Mrs. Ginny did not have to leave until 9:00 since we worked at the Food Bank today. Kathleen and Jenni started out with mopping and sweeping the floors while Natalie and Mrs. Ginny were given the never ending task of packing food boxes. Ben also worked on miscellaneous chores like sorting school supplies. The adult guys helped transport packages to people’s cars. By eleven all the teens were working on packing boxes. The boxes were stuffed high and filled with many delicious delicacies like dove chocolate. We met many nice, humble people (volunteers) there who told us where to find Dari King! YEAH! We left at one for the house to eat lunch and then at two left for the floor and paint/scrapping site, where the teens, Mr. Scott, and Mrs. Barbara scrapped paint to their hearts content. Simultaneously Mrs. Millie and Mrs. Michelle primed the other side of the house. Mr. John and Mr. Gary continued to work on the floor. We also learned that the two things you need at all times to fix anything are duck tape and a power washer.

The teens also got to drill the floor in, proving teamwork pays off! Mrs. Michelle and Mrs. Millie played Picasso in the mountain mist coloring well within the lines at all times. Mr. John and Mr. Gary spent the day singing “Joist to the World” finishing most of the floor. About 2 the teens came over the hill to save the old folk from obtaining “chipping” elbow. Of note motor lead foot Mrs. Millie drove a country truck. Increase your insurance! It was a great day for the deck team. The group fought the final battle of the rocks and set the last posts. Stairs, treads, and hand rails were installed, and just some finishing work and the concrete pad remain to be completed tomorrow. They also participated in a late day math quiz of intersecting angles which presented some challenges but they still worked through it and came up with a solution. Annelyn and Rebecca even made the first piece of deck furniture and also created a monster Jenga set from the surplus picket pieces. We went to the City of Pound tonight to hear some what was truly great bluegrass music. Some brave members went up and danced which added to some truly memorable pictures! Thanks for your prayers they are truly helpful.
